Universities can only thrive if they are places where diversity of thought is encouraged and respected, and where ideas representing a range of viewpoints can be aired, debated, and evaluated on their merits. I have published multiple academic works (examples here and here) and broader commentary pieces on the role of free expression at universities, at both public universities that have First Amendment obligations, and at private universities that, while not bound by the First Amendment, have an interest in promoting a culture of respectful debate on complex issues.
